Welcome to Sandringham Little Athletics, where every child has the opportunity to be active, build confidence, and achieve their personal best.

From first-timers to experienced athletes, our weekly programs help children develop fundamental sporting skills while having fun with friends in a supportive community environment.

What is Little Athletics at Sandringham?

A fun introduction to running, jumping and throwing where children develop fundamental athletic skills while making friends and being part of a community.  We are an inclusive Centre and can modify activities and events for all abilities.

We offer Under 6 athletes a dedicated coaching program called “On Track”.  This program is run on the in-field throughout the season and focuses on introducing the children to athletics and developing the children’s motor skills while having fun.

For U7-U9 athletes, we run a skill development program for the first two weeks. This program introduces athletes to the fundamentals of the athletic disciplines. After the initial skill development, we have dedicated coaches for each event throughout the season that provide coaching and instruction to help the athlete develop their skills.

For our U10+ athletes, we have coaches for each event that provide guidance and input to help the athlete continue to develop their skills.

We have 3 programs of events that are rotated on a weekly basis. Our Calendar highlights what Program Number we are running on a particular day and what events it includes.

Depending on their age group, athletes may participate in events including:

  • Sprints
  • Middle distance running
  • Hurdles
  • Long Jump
  • Triple Jump
  • High Jump
  • Shot Put
  • Discus
  • Javelin

1. Check your athletes age group?

All Little Athletes compete with other children of their same age. The age group for your child is determined by the year of their child’s birth. Use the official Little Athletics Victoria Age Calculator to check which age group your child will compete in.

2. Give Little Athletics a try

For those families who have not been involved in Little Athletics before, we offer the opportunity for your children to trial Little Athletics for free.   LAVic recommends trials for new members and advises that refunds aren’t available once full registration has been paid.

Cancellation and Program Changes

Cancellation of weekly competition programs can occur throughout the season due to wet weather or excessive heat conditions. On a Saturday morning, or prior to any twilight programs scheduled, if you are concerned that the program may be cancelled, please check our socials and communications platform advised in our news bulletin before heading out.

The decision to cancel a program is made by the Sandy Little Aths Committee with the safety of athletes and officials as their primary concern. On some occasions, a program may also be altered to suit weather conditions. The Little Athletics Victoria weather policy will be used in the decision-making process.

5. Personal Bests

This is celebrated in our club.  Success isn’t just about coming first. It’s about every child striving to achieve their own Personal Best.

Throughout the season, athletes can track their results and celebrate their improvement across running, jumping and throwing events

The season calendar can be found by going to our Season Calendar page.

6. You want more??….

Other opportunities exits for athletes to compete at local open days, regional events and state events.  We let all members know of these.

7. Uniform

We  require all registered athletes to wear the approved centre uniform. Each athlete must wear the correct uniform at all competition events which comprises Sandringham Little Athletics Centre Tshirt, singlet or crop-top with the SLAC and sponsors logo in the correct place and black shorts. The shorts or leggings worn must be plain black.  Note:  new athletes can wear comfortable clothing until they purchase the uniform.

The registration patch must be worn at all times, and should be attached to the front of the T-Shirt, singlet or crop-top at chest position. The registration chest patch is to show the athlete is registered and clearly identifies the athlete for recording of times.  Please refer to the image for the correct location of the registration patch on the singlet and crop-top.

8. Parents Are Part of the Team

Little Athletics is more than a sport for children. It’s a sport that brings families together.

Unlike many junior sports, Little Athletics relies on parents and volunteers to help create a fun, safe and successful environment for every athlete. From setting up equipment to helping run events, families play an important role in making each competition day possible.

The good news is that no athletics experience is required. We’ll provide guidance and support, and most roles are simple to learn.

How Parents Help

Our volunteers assist with a variety of activities, including:

  • Age Group leadership
  • Measuring jumps and throws
  • Raking sand pits
  • Retrieving equipment
  • Track officiating
  • Canteen and BBQ operations
  • Equipment setup and pack-up
  • General event assistance

Every helping hand contributes to a great experience for our athletes.

9. Parent Duty

To help share the workload fairly, each family participates in our Parent Duty Program throughout the season.

Many parents find that volunteering is one of the best ways to get involved, meet other families and become part of the club.

Sign Up to Parent Duty will be made upon registration.

10. A Final Reminder to Parents

Sandy Little Aths is not a drop-off activity.

A parent or responsible guardian is required to remain at the venue while their child is participating in competition or training. Parents and guardians remain responsible for their child’s wellbeing and are required to be available should an injury, illness or other issue arise.
