The track was a buzz last night with members joining us (in slight drizzle) for our mid week coaching session.

So we’re all extremely excited to get to the opening Saturday morning this weekend and see all of you and your little athletes at the Sandringham track again.

This Saturday…

Two more sleeps and we start our official regular morning program. To help you prepare for this Saturday (8th October) here are some key things you need to know:

• start times:  u6-u9  8.15am      &      u10-u17  9.45am
• coffee van:  yes!
• BBQ: yes!
• where to go: the map below shows you
• what to bring: water bottle, hat & sunscreen (if sunny)
• sign in: at the parent duty tent to collect your high-viz vest and ‘help sheet’
• parent duties: have you signed up for 4 duties during the season? Please do so as we are all volunteers working with our kids to improve their athletic skill development.  SIGN UP HERE

• car parking: we have car parking at the track as well as in the streets – please be mindful of where you park in the streets so our neighbors can access their driveways
• first aid: located at the timing tent (Nicole is our designated first aider)
• wet weather: we have it covered so to speak…on our website we have a wet weather button (top left hand corner)….we will update it at 7.30am if the weather is concerning and again at 9.15am for the second session.
• Program: this week it has changed slightly  – see here….we are not measuring for the first week (we are timing races though) so we can all get familiar with or again with little aths.

Also…

• If you and your child are new to little aths…..awesome, they are amongst great friends who can help teach and develop their athletic skills
• Medical concerns:  if we don’t know about it already, please let Nicole know on sandringhampresident@lavic.com.au or 0413 705 357
• Coaching:  Our Coaches include current little athletes (u16 & u17), former little athletes and experienced parents.
• Set up pack up roster – yes this is a team effort. Your age group either sets up or packs up when rostered. Less than 30mins is all that we need to help complete the job.
• Wednesday coaching  – don’t miss out  – limited spots and sign up here each week

Finally…

The Stack TeamApp  holds all the consistent resources you need including latest news, “how to’ guides,  links to mid week coaching and the much valued ‘parent duty’ – more info on Team App

Other Concerns?  Or have a great idea?

Please feel free to email us at sandringham@lavic.com.au, or call us on 0419 406 593.

As we enjoy the long Grand Final weekend, we realise that on the other side of it, Little Aths starts.   Best we let you know what is going on.

For those of you who are new to the club, a very big welcome.  To the many members returning back this season, we are super excited to have you back with the team!

As a proud Club President who has been involved for more than 8 years (argh feeling my age),  I whole heartedly know you are going to enjoy the whole experience.   My Hot Tip is – get involved – there is nothing more fulfilling than being engaged with your children during sport.  They grow up fast and remember those times you were alongside them supporting their skill learning.

If you have not seen our welcome message on your membership receipt here is a link to it.   Welcome Letter

Now To The Season Start…

Sandy Little Aths First Session:  Saturday 8 October:  U6-U9  8.15am start, U10-U17 9.45am start

BYO water bottle, sunscreen and competition patch.

Welcome Morning – Pick up your Uniform and Competition Patch Saturday 1 October 9-11am:  Come down to the track anytime between 9-11am for a run, collect your uniform, competition patch, buy the uniform and meet some of the team.  If you can’t make this time, we do have collection on Wed 5th October 4.30pm – 5.30pm during our first coaching session.

Our First Session is Program 1  – refer here for the detail.  The emphasis will be on teaching/coaching the skill & having fun with our team mates this week, therefore we won’t be measuring jumps and throws on this day.  Measuring will come into the Program in the following weeks for most of the age groups.

Parent Duty:  Parents are a fundamental key to our program delivery and we rely on everyone’s support.  There are a couple of parts to Duty:

• Set up and/ pack up where age groups are rostered on to do these 1 or 2 times per season.  The SLAC Committee will do week 1 but here is the schedule for the season of when your age group is on.  SET UP/PACK UP
• Age Group Duty sign up is helping us run the program for the kids each Saturday (raking sandpits, measuring throws, directing the team to the next activity, BBQ & Canteen etc).  This Duty is via an online sign up located here.  We can’t start/hold events without your help and be rest assured we have help sheets and face to face learning so you know what the duty tasks are.

Heads Up:  Under 8 Boys and Open Girls you are assigned the BBQ week 1.

Coaching Mid Week Wednesday  (it is free for members):  Starting Wednesday 5th October. Everyone warms up as a group then split into the coaching areas chosen.  A fortnightly rotation of activities is offered with special Masterclass sessions in High Jump, Discus Spin and Javelin on various dates.

Wednesday 5th the coaching program will start for U8-U17,  the following week U6-U7 activities start.

Sign up to Wednesday Coaching is a must and can be done here as spaces are limited.

Communication  – how do you stay informed??

• A weekly email will be sent from the Club advising of the upcoming activities and events
• Team App (Stack Team App on the App Store (apple.com))  will provide key information for you:  weekly program, duty roster, how to guide etc
• Facebook/Instagram reminds you of what is coming up and any news we need to share

_________________________________________________________________________

Interested in being involved in small capacity to help?

• We are looking for a few people who can help us collect the boxes of bananas from Sandringham Coles each week.  Coles are a major sponsor of Little Athletics throughout Australia and provide complimentary fruit to our kids….we just need help getting it to the track
• We also are in need of someone who is happy to work behind the scenes coordinating our weekly Parent Duty Roster.  It is an easy computer orientated task and great if you could come Saturday morning from time to time to check in on how it is all going.

If you are able to and keen to help please email Mike on sandringham@lavic.com.au

_________________________________________________________________________

Enjoy the break if you are on holidays, enjoy the Grand Final and we look forward to having you join us for coaching on Wednesday 5th October or our first session of Little Aths Oct 8th.

Hot Tip  – collect your competition patch before Saturday 8th!

Last Saturday’s Centre Championships Event was one of the best days I can remember at Little Aths.  Nothing was more heart warming than seeing the kids enjoying the podium, supporting each other, trying new events and receiving ‘bling’ or covering their hoodies in pinned ribbons.

Parents, thank you so much for helping us make this day a huge success for the kids.

Our AGM and Awards Day is this Saturday morning.  Please come down.  We really need a quorum for the AGM to vote in a new Committee and we want everyone to be a part of the awards presentation supporting their age group.

• Season Best Certificates will be given to all athletes.
• Ben will run a complimentary  BBQ  (sausages only but I am sure he will sneak in a few hash browns)
• Miss Molly’s coffee cart will be there and coffees are on us!
• The foam javelins, vortex’s, bumper balls will all be out for the kids to have fun with

Please do come down for a couple of hours of fun outside on Saturday morning to finish off the season in style… we’d love to see you.

• 9.30am:  AGM
• 10am:  Awards Commence starting with U7 – U16 Age Group Awards, followed by U16 Graduates of 2020/21 (they missed out due to Covid), U16 Graduates of 2021/22, 10 year, 7 year certificates, Centre Records Certificates & the David Oliver Life Membership Award.

The Raffle Prize winners were as follows.  Congratulations to all and items can be collected Saturday morning.  1st Prize: Melinda Scarce, 2nd Prize: Alex Ghannou, 3rd Prize: Tyson Kersley, 4th Prize: Kurt Albrecht, 5th Prize: Mike Cahill, 6th Prize: Damien Miller, 7th Prize: Sonya Mattern, 8th Prize: Peter (ticket 0132), 9th Prize: Christian Santalucia, 10th Prize: D Painter.

LOST PROPERTY….. oh it has exploded, so if you are missing a water bottle or item of clothing please come down before we donate everything to a local charity on Saturday.

A reminder that the registrations for this Saturday’s Centre Championships will close tomorrow night at 7pm (not on Thursday as originally advertised). The preliminary timetable for this is now available online here

If you get stuck using ResultsHQ to register your little athlete for their preferred events then please review the process flow here or else email us at sandringham@lavic.com.au if you are having serious difficulties registering.

The final timetable will be circulated on Friday, but please note that any changes are likely to be very minor.

Information You Need to know

HELP – parents we will need your help on Saturday. The Committee will be tied-up acting as Officials to make sure the event runs smoothly.  The Coaches will not be coaching but officiating, so parents will need to help out each age group with event clashes, measuring and recording.

BBQ – we will also need help from parents to manage the BBQ this week please. We hugely appreciate everyone that who has helped us out previously and so far we’ve generated approximately $800 in additional funds for the Club. The BBQ in previously years was outsourced, so we are thrilled we have been able to generate this money into the Club for much needed resources. Thank you so much for all the support.

RAFFLE – the raffle is drawn this Saturday at 11.30am, so get in quickly to have a chance at winning something and get your raffle tickets (or a book!) early on Saturday morning. It all helps the club and we are desperately trying to purchase much needed high jump equipment for next year. We are nearly there!!

Cross Country – starts in a few weeks (30th April)…so please register your interest with Mike via email at sandringham@lavic.com.au to receive updates and related news circulars.  It is a great way to maintain fitness and keep active through the winter.

Look out for further communications about this weekend on Friday… the big event is nearly here!!

The long weekend was a really busy one for Sandy Little Aths members: many PB’s (personal bests) were achieved during the program on Saturday morning, and also at Lakeside where some of our members qualified for the State Track and Field Competition.

Pssst… if you did not see the results and efforts of our athletes at States, please read here. Leni took 17seconds off her PB.  Incredible!

We congratulate all the athletes qualifying for states.

Information You Need to know

• Mentone Relays  – 27th March (Sunday week)…entries close THIS Saturday as team selection needs to be in – sign up is here:  mentone relay register

• Centre champs – are in two weeks and entries close Thursday 31 March 7pm.  If you are having issues remembering passwords etc to login please see Nicole on Saturday morning or email sandringhampresident@lavic.com.au.   The nomination process /guide for centre champs is here: nomination process CC
• Club Awards and AGM – diaries for this date is 9th April.  It will take place in the morning
• Cross Country – as the Little Aths Season draws to a close, we want you to consider joining the cross country.  It is a fabulous relaxed program, a great way for the kids to maintain fitness but also for those who want to keep competing.  It takes place on a Saturday morning and is only 1 event each week at various local cross country locations.  The distances for the kids are:

u6: 500m
u7-u8: 1km
u9-u10: 1.5km
u11-u12: 2km
u13-u16: 3km

• Mid Week Running –  in support of the cross country season and the fact that many of you are enjoying the weekly run sessions we will continue to offer Wednesday running.  The format will change slightly considering more fitness development and cross country preparation (e.g. beach runs & stair runs) but more information will follow.
• Lost Property  – the basket is overflowing! We have two weeks left before we throw water bottles out and pass on the clothes to the charity shops.  Please review lost property on Saturday.
• Schools bookings – is your school keen to hold their athletics carnival at the Sandy Aths track?  If so, please let them know they can hire out some of our equipment to make it easier for them.   We will offer ‘friends of the club rates’ if it is your school that needs to hire equipment.  Let Nicole or Mike know if you would prefer her to contact the school directly.
• Concierge anyone?  The Club is seeking a few local people to help us when school’s hire our equipment for their athletics carnival.  The job requires you to open the shed and pass out the equipment the school is hiring, then come back and receive it all when they are finished.  We are paying a small fee for this role and happy to discuss this further with anyone interested.  Great job for any one looking for local part time work.

Sandy Little Aths is on this weekend. A long weekend you were thinking?

Typically we would run our program on the Friday night of the long weekend (or not at all), but with 50 of our club members already competing this weekend at the State Little Aths Track and Field Competition, the Committee felt it was important to be able to provide a program for the rest of our 250 members.

Plus…. we are starting to see some amazing improvements in our athletes’ skills development and fitness – so how could we not offer a little aths session for you all this weekend?

This Saturday

Saturday’s program will start at 9am and is focused on fun, developing several core skills and the very popular track relays. Details of the full program is available via this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aE5PN-iQ_-Wq0quskmZgdKkqq_YDf-cJ/view?usp=sharing

Just like that… it is March!

That means that it is not long to go now before we have our Centre Championships, Mentone Relays and Club Awards / AGM Carnival events.

Please ensure you are across all the information on these special days. We have listed the details below and kindly point out that these are events the kids genuinely love to be a part of, so please do diary date them now and make sure you register.

A brief note from the President

I have been warmed by the generous nature of our Community after my email asking for help: set up, pack up, BBQ  – thank you so much. We couldn’t do it without you.

Very soon the Committee at the AGM in April will be dissolved, and a new one formed.  Pssst…..this is not the time to stop reading….. and this is my serious voice as the Club relies upon the energy and enthusiasm of our volunteer parents to keep growing and developing the athletics program we can offer our kids.

We understand being busy, working, running around after the kids etc… but it’s an average of about 1 hour per week of help to the Club. Here is what a few of our Committee would like to share with you in terms of feedback:

“I get a lot out of volunteering here at the ground level  and for me this is my personal donation to a community cause/charity. I see the real positive impact we have on the kids for myself.”

“Seeing the smiles of kids faces when they achieve their best or are having fun with friends, is such a joyous moment every time.   I love being involved making a difference to them.”

“I have learnt so many life and business skills being on this Committee, far more than I do in my current day job.  The team work is real (and fun) and we all collaborate so well to achieve our goals.”

“It’s all about the kids, giving them learning opportunities to develop their skills in a fun way.  I coach the a local football team too and can see the transferable skills that little aths brings to the football team.”

Convinced yet? We warmly welcome you to join us, bring your new jokes, insights and help to grow the cause for our young athletes – please email Nicole (sandringham@lavic.com.au) to register your interest or if you have any questions.

We are always learning at Sandy Little Aths… we review our program & operations each week, seek your input and love to hear your suggestions.

This week there are a lot of “NEW” things to share with you… please read on and make sure you don’t miss the relays section.

1. We have a Map of the Track – with no north and south’s to confuse you.  Just numbers!   We ask that you please FOLLOW the program outlined as much as possible because we have set every area up with the right equipment and allocated spaces due to group sizes.  The MAP is HERE there will be a copy in everyone’s group folder on the weekend.
2. The Results Hub online is an area a few do not know about.  This is where you can view your child’s results each week, including their PB’s (personal bests).  Included is a link to our website so you can navigate your way into your child/ren’s special page to see how their results are going each week.  It is important to find this page at some point soon because this is where you will have to nominate the events your athlete would like to compete in for our Centre Championships  (see below)  RESULTS HQ:  Results – Sandringham Little Athletics (sandringhamlac.com.au)
3. Centre Championships Saturday 2nd April 2022:  The Sandringham Little Athletics Club Centre Championships is a major Club event where the kids can compete in events they choose.  A timetable is being worked on but the detail below is provided for initially information.  The program starts around 8am and concludes by 12.30pm.  How it works is
   • Under 6 – Under 7 athletes will be able to choose a maximum of 3 events to compete in.
   • Under 8 – Under 16 athletes will be able to choose a maximum of 4 events to compete in.
   • Athletes participating in the Centre Championships must nominate via the invite seen on your resultshq portal.  We will share those instructions later.
   • Centre Championships are free and nominations will be open until Thursday 31st March 7pm.
   • Each child will receive either a medal (1st, 2nd or 3rd) or a ribbon for the next 10 places
4. Mentone Relay Day 27th March:  One of our best fun events on the calendar and is where our athletes compete in teams and run in a variety of distances against other clubs.  We have attached a little summary of what to expect but if you are interested in being part of the relay competition, we are holding a come and try: learn about relays on Wednesday 5-6pm at the track.  A flyer will be available on Saturday at our entrance. Click here for summary: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CUvTNzNGpL7pMr0erh_JxEboXF0-RG6T/view?usp=sharing
5. New to Little Aths and not quite sure about what the events are your children do or how to measure etc:   over the next few weeks we will provide links to videos or fact sheets put together for Little Aths..This one is from LANSW  – click for long jump
6. A New Timing Coordinator – desperately needed as we are weeks away before we lose our Timing Coordinator, Ash.   Ash has been doing this role for Sandy for a few years.  He needed a little IT knowledge and worked very hard on simplifying processes.  We really need someone who is able to do this role for say 2 seasons so we have consistency.  Please let us know asap.
7. The new PB wall, we have discovered is of great interest and value to our athletes…doing their best on that day is all we can ask –  thank you parents and AGM’s for supporting this new initiative.
8. Pre-season Training:  this is a new initiative of the club’s facilitating a 4 week pre season run training session for the Under 12+ Hampton Rovers Football Teams.  Our SLAC coaches have loved the first week so far as have the kids in attendance.
9. Our Season Calendar is here for your reference.  Note we will be running a program (non points) on the long weekend in March
10. Monster Raffle:  this is the club’s major fundraiser supporting the operations of the club including resources (eg equipment) and costs (coaches).  Please buy a couple of tickets or even a book of tickets ($30).  The prizes on offer are fabulous.  Here is the list of them and you can buy the raffle tickets at the track or via the sandringham little aths shop on our website here :  we will drop off tickets sold.
11. Mid-Week Coaching  – more spots have been opened up for the run training squad and this week we have discus & shot for those athletes competing at States.  Mike will be down for a few tips and pointers for the discus and shot athletes. 430pm – 530pm.  Sign up for run squad or discus/shot is here https://signup.com/go/zywYtie
12. Private Coaching Anyone?  –  Natasha has started up private coaching on a Monday afternoon and her details/information are here.

This Saturday

State Track and Field Progressions

We are very proud to share with you the athletes who qualified into the State Track and Field Championships.  Many of these athletes have been training hard for this moment  (even during covid – they still had a focus) and for them the chance to finally compete at State Level is here.

Congratulations to all of these athletes, many of whom are competing in multiple events.  Some of you have expressed interested in watching these athletes live on the day so we will let you know the link for that.

Other Notes of Importance…

We would like to remind everyone, athletes, parents, coaches, officials and other volunteers that the Club has a Code of Conduct by which it operates.  It is important that all those involved including members are aware of these regulations namely parent conduct, child safe conduct and coach safe conduct.  Our website has the SLAC Regulations and Code of Conduct HERE.  The Club has 4 Child Safety Officers:  Nicole George, Karen Farrell, Natasha Franchina and Todd Hartley

Finally

Look out for the voucher to Bakers Delight in Hampton Street  – Paul has kindly helped us with supplies for the BBQ and will be further support us with little surprises.  Please show your support to Paul and his team at Bakers Delight in Hampton Street.  You never know…you might find a coach or two working there as well!
