What is Little Aths?
Little Aths is a program designed for children and teenagers to develop their skills in running, jumping and throwing. Little Aths is held on and around an athletic track with the events including sprint and distance runs, hurdles, jumps and throws. Athletes learn these fundamental physical skills and compete with other children of similar age and development. Our events are modified to suit the specific ages of the athletes.
Where and when does Little Aths run at Sandringham?
Sandringham Little Aths runs our program at the athletics track on Glamis Avenue, Hampton. Our program runs over the spring & summer. We meet every Saturday morning between mid-September and early March with a Christmas break in between. Note that the 2020/21 season has been delayed due to COVID19 restrictions, and the current start date is TBD.
At what time of the day does Little Aths run?
Sandringham Little Aths runs two session each Saturday. Under6 (U6) to Under9 (U9) age groups start warm-ups at 8:15 for their session that runs from 8:30 – 10:00am. Under10 (U10) to Under16 (U16) age groups start warm-ups at 9:45 for their session that runs from 10:00 – 12:00pm.
I’m not sure if my child will like Little Aths, so can I bring them for a trial session?
Yes, absolutely! We welcome families who are unsure about Little Aths to have up to 2 trial sessions with us during any Saturday meet. You must sign-up through the registration portal via our website but you won’t pay anything…. please just select ‘trial’ when prompted.
My child has never done Little Aths before. How will they learn how to do athletics?
Sandringham Little Aths prides ourselves on our ability to teach and coach our young athletes to learn and develop their skills in running, jumping and throwing.
• For U6 athletes, we run a dedicated coaching program on the in-field on Saturday mornings throughout the season which focuses developing their motor skills while having fun.
• For U7-U9 athletes, we run a skill development program on Saturday mornings for the first four weeks. This program introduces athletes to the fundamentals of the athletic disciplines. After the initial four weeks, we have dedicated coaches for each event that provide coaching and instruction to help the athlete develop their skills.
• For U10+ athletes, we have coaches for each event that provide guidance and input to help the athlete continue to develop their skills.
How do I register?
Registrations open late August each year on the LA Victoria Registration Portal. Currently with COVID restrictions in place we are yet to be advised on a start date for 2020. You can express interest however in joining the club by sending us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
How do I know which age group my child is in?
Age groups are determined by the year of your child’s birth. The age group will be the next number above the age which your child turns in 2020. For example, a child that turns 10 in 2020 will be in the Under11 group. For more information, please visit LA Victoria Age Group Calculator.
Where can I buy a uniform?
Uniforms will be available for purchase starting on the first Saturday of competition. New athletes are welcome to wear comfortable running clothing of their choosing until their uniform is purchased.
Do parents need to volunteer?
Yes, parent volunteers are essential in the running of our program. Because Sandringham Little Aths is a volunteer-run organization, the assistance of athletes’ parents each week is essential for filling the many and varied duties required, including staffing the canteen, measuring long jumps, recording throws, to name a few. Volunteering at Sandringham Little Aths also allows parents to be fully involved in their child’s sporting interests.
Is there training available for my child?
Yes, SLAC provides free mid-week training to all members in the Under7-16 age groups during the season. Training will run on Wednesday evenings, once we confirm our start date.
